BBC Singers must be saved from axe, says top baritone, as MPs call for Lineker-style U-turn

Roderick Williams, the leading baritone who will play a starring role at the King’s coronation, has said the decision to axe the BBC Singers must be reversed 🔴 Exclusive from adamsherwin10

The BBC said the move is part of a new classical strategy which will allow it “to invest more widely in the future of choral singing across the UK” and launch a choral development programme for new talent. It is also cutting 20 per cent of positions in the BBC Philharmonic, Symphony and Concert Orchestras.

The issue is has created a fresh political headache for the BBC, still reeling from the Gary Lineker tweets row. Shadow Arts minister Barbara Keeley slammed an act of “cultural vandalism by the BBC, which would be so extremely damaging to the future of music in this country.” The Liberal Democrats have written to Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, warning that “this decision to disband will have a disastrous effect on the cultural landscape of the UK, with little economic benefit to the BBC.”
