- ROME, NOV 5 - The government only ever intended to cover the social security contributions of working mothers with two children for one year in its 2024 budget, the economy ministry said on Saturday.

The clarification came after it was reported that the government had sent a correction to the Senate stipulating that the cover of up to 3,000 euros a year in social contributions for working mothers with two children, with the youngest being under 10, would be available until December 31, 2024 and not until the end of 2026 as initially proposed.

"The letter to Speaker La Russa with the request for correction of the rule on decontribution measures for mothers with two children is aimed at making the text sent to the Senate consistent with the technical report and with the text approved in the Council of Ministers on October 16," said the ministry.

"The original approved regulation always only provided for one year of decontribution for working mothers with two children and for three years on an experimental basis for women with three children " with the youngest up to 18, it added. The proposed social security contributions cover is part of stated government efforts to reverse Italy's declining birth rate.
