Based on general calculations, the B.C. Government could reap double the amount of speeding fine revenue once the speed cameras are in action.

The B.C. government has made good on a promise to switch some of its 140 red-light cameras across the province into “speed on green” mode. That means if you are caught speeding through one of those intersections you will get a speeding ticket sent to you in the mail.1. What is the Intersection Safety Program? The 20-year-old program has cameras at 140 intersections in 26 communities across B.C. Currently the cameras are set up to only take photos of drivers who blow through red lights.

3. Where are they going to be and how will I know? There are 12 locations in Vancouver, seven in Surrey, three in Burnaby, two each in Langley and Kelowna and one each in Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Delta, Maple Ridge, Nanaimo, North Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam and Richmond. See the bottom of this story for a map and list of the locations of all 35 speed camera locations.

ICBC’s response was, “We’d need to put in a data request and that would take time .” Postmedia News has made that request, so stay tuned. But in the meantime, some very rough calculations can be made. The government wouldn’t reveal how far over the speed limit a driver needs to be travelling to activate a camera. However, based on government data mentioned above, if on average 10,500 speeders go through an ISP intersection each year , then that’s 367,500 speeders going through 35 intersections a year. With a $196 fine for each, that’s a whopping $72 million — more than twice what the government reaps in fines at the moment.

“My concern is that these intersection cameras were put in for a specific purpose ,” Morris said. “I hope the impetus is not to capture more fine money.”
