Opinion: It’s slower than a cyclone but the east coast low can be deadly too | Nick O'Malley

Using language that sounded oddly familiar to an Australian ear he warned that citizens of around the world were already being “clobbered” by climate change.

The people of the NSW Northern Rivers and of south-eastern Queensland – indeed of much of Australia’s east coast – have long experience of being clobbered by their weather, and particularly by the systems known as east coast lows. These are intense low-pressure systems typically initiated by cold air in the upper atmosphere which prowl across the continent from the Southern Ocean before crashing into warm air from the Coral Sea.

Scientists and meteorologists are rightly hesitant to attribute specific weather events to the trend of global warming. But Steffen, a member of the Climate Council and former director of the Australian National University Climate Change Institute, notes as climate models improve and the data used to feed them grows, attribution science is rapidly improving. The world,, has already warmed 1.1 degrees. Parts of Australia have already warmed 1.4 degrees.
